Bloomberg proposes ban on sale of sugary drinks more than 16 ounces

I heard about this off of the internet a few days ago. This idea from Bloomberg is not gonna fly to me. You can't tell a restaurant which drinks thye should serve to their patrons! But if an antismoker thinks banning large pop drinks in a restaurant is dumb, then you're slowly starting to see why certain smoking bans are dumb too.

This idea is all about dictating how businesses should run. Just like with smoking bans controlling businesses too.

ME: Sounds more like persuading 60k smokers to buy their cigs outside of IL and in MO or Indiana (or even KY) instead. Cigs in Wisconsin aint as cheap as Indiana's/MO's prices.

Be prepared to pay 11 bucks for a pack in Chicago pretty soon! That price in itself is enough to convince me to go somewhere else!

Bloomnerd (the NYC mayor) oughta mind his own business. I recently heard he donated half of a million bucks towards the campaign for raising the CA cig tax to $1 a pack.

If Bloomnerd wants to raise the CA cig taxes, maybe he should move there and make life even worse for CA smokers. I wish he could donate millions of bucks to smokers rights groups instead. In my dreams!

Sounds like his main goal is to do what it takes to make cig packs $15 in all 50 states. What would even be worse than that is a fed smoking ban. I know Bloomnerd would love a smoke-free USA!

Heating up FSCs in the microwave

I heard about this idea in the past. On how heating up cigs for 30 secs in a microwave neutralizes the FSC chemicals.

I actually tried this out for myself. Except I didnt heat em up in the Newport pack. I took all of em out, and placed em on an opened-up napkin in the microwave. After they heated up, I put em back in the pack.

I believe if you heat em up in the pack, you gotta remove the silver foil inside of the pack before heating. When I removed the foil, a tiny piece of it was left in the pack. I didnt take my chances of putting the pack in the wave cause of the tiny foil.

After the cigs heated up, I noticed they smelled a lot more like the way unlit Newports smelled in the non-FSC days. They smelled like all tobacco instead, in other words.

As far as the taste goes, they still taste like Newport box 100s. I still tasted more tobacco than the actual mint. (Of course, some menthol brands have a lot more mint flavor on drags. Such as Salems and VS/BH menthols)

The only negative thing I notice so far is the Newports taste a lil weaker after the cigs are heated up. They may taste like a Newport. But they also feel less stronger than a normal FSC Newport.

Maybe heating up FSC cigs to make em taste like non-FSCs also lowers their tar/nic levels. (Maybe the heat "kills" the nicotine in em?)

The FSC Newports don't bother me anyway. They taste just like the non-FSC Newports of the past. And as Michael C said once, Newports are the FSCs that come the closest to tasting like an actual cig. Except he still loved his Reds more. Michael C is s smoker who used to be a regular poster on the smoking fetish boards.

I keep my cartons in the freezer to keep em fresh for a long time. Maybe freezing em neutralizes the chemicals as well.

Missouri: Bill would restrict smoking bans

A Springfield, Mo., legislator is proposing to prohibit Missouri cities and counties from banning smoking in establishments where at least 60 percent of retail sales come from alcohol, tobacco or entertainment.

The legislation, if passed, would mean that many more bars, bowling alleys, bingo halls, billiard parlors and movie theaters, among other businesses, could be exempted from smoke-free ordinances. Casinos would fall into that category.
Restaurants probably would not be affected, said the bill's sponsor, Rep. Melissa Leach, R-Springfield.

The bill will be heard today by the House Small Business Committee.

The bill would need to win committee approval before it could be debated by the full House. With less than three weeks left in the session, it would be hard for a bill to make it through the legislative process unless it were added as an amendment to another bill that is already in the pipeline.

As to whether she expects it to pass this session, Leach said: "I believe in miracles."
Leach said her purpose was to give business owners more of a say in how to run their establishments.
Under the bill, she said, 'smoking would be left up to the business owner, not the local government."
Voters in Springfield passed a comprehensive smoking ban last year. A move to repeal it is on the June ballot.

Fewer teens are smoking cigs. BUT, they're smoking other stuff instead

Don't you love it when schools do everything they can to make cigs sound more deadly (to kids) than weed or coke? Last time I checked, life is full of all kinds of risks. And I recently heard that more teens in modern times are smoking weed instead of cigs.

Anti-smokers should NOT be happy to hear about an increase in teens engaging in weed smoking. I know I wouldn't be happy. Since smoking weed is much worse than cigs. I guess antis don't care if a teen smokes weed. Since weed aint cigs, right?

I can't forget lots of people who hate cig smokers enjoy weed smoking. That's right. Lots of antismokers are actual weed smokers.

The state of Kansas is cracking down on businesses that offer smokers an alternative to buying cigarettes by the pack. Businesses with machines that let people "roll your own" cigarettes are being shut down. In the last week, the state closed about 20 across Kansas.

USA RYO: Amendment to highway bill sideswipes Little Tobacco. Nobody mentioned tobacco last week when the U.S. Senate adopted an amendment to the $109 billion federal highway bill. But tucked into the 5,600-word amendment to provide aid for rural schools was a single paragraph that would settle a two-year-old fight between Big Tobacco and a small Ohio company that builds a do-it-yourself machine that allows smokers to get their cigarettes a lot cheaper. The amendment would reclassify tobacco shops that offer the machines as "tobacco manufacturers," imposing on them new regulations and higher taxes, and it opens a window into the ways of Washington, where the powerful and the connected can sometimes win even before the opposition knows the game is underway. "This is catastrophic," was the response of Phil Accordino, whose tiny company builds the roll-your-own cigarette machines in Girard, Ohio, when he heard of the Senate action. Binge Smoking

Last night, I smoked 28 Newports in only 4 hours. I know it's possible for some ladies to smoke a pack in 2 hours actually. I think I smoked 44 cigs for the whole "Good" Friday. *chuckle*

44 cigs in one day is NOT my all-time personal record for most cigs smoked in one day. That record of 56 cigs in one day (all Newports) is still intact. I still remember that day. It was a Sunday in September 2006. And Da Bears beat the Packers in Green Bay from Week 1 of that season.

However, 44 cigs in one day is a new record for most cigs smoked in a day since my mother's death from last summer. The old record was 42 cigs (which was done within a few days after her death).

I notice time flew by fast when I did that binge smoking last nite. I aint calling it chainsmoking. Since I did take a break of a few seconds in-between each cig.

I recall chainsmoking a whole ML pack 9 years ago. Took me almost 2 hours to do so. But I'll be lucky to chainsmoke a pack of Newports.

I guess I actually DID smoke a pack in 2 hours once myself. But those were ML 100s. And light cigs are much easier to smoke than my brand. I might smoke MLs once in a blue moon now.

FDA to require BT companies to report dangerous chemicals

Washington ~ Tobacco companies will be required to report the levels of dangerous chemicals found in cigarettes, chew and other products under the latest rules designed to tighten regulation of the tobacco industry.

The preliminary guidance issued Friday by the Food and Drug Administration marks the first time tobacco makers would be required to report quantities of 20 chemicals associated with cancer, lung disease and other health problems. The FDA will release the information in a consumer-friendly format by next April.

"Cigarettes are the only mass-consumed product in this country for which consumers don't know what's in them, until now," said Dr. Lawrence Deyton, director of FDA's tobacco center, in an interview with the Associated Press.

Ammonia, carbon monoxide and formaldehyde are among the ingredients or byproducts of tobacco that are subject to the new rule.

Regulators have identified more than 93 harmful or potentially harmful chemicals in tobacco products, though the agency is only focusing on 20 for the coming year. The agency will take comments on the guidance until June 4. There is no deadline for when the documents will become final.

A law enacted in 2009 gave the FDA authority to regulate a number of aspects of tobacco marketing and manufacturing, though the agency cannot ban nicotine. FDA also gained authority to set standards on levels of harmful ingredients in tobacco products, though the agency is not yet using that power.

The same law lets the agency approve new tobacco products that could be marketed as safer than what's currently for sale.

In separate guidance issued Friday, the FDA laid out the scientific studies it will require before any company can market a so-called modified-risk tobacco product. Companies must submit extensive testing data on health risks for users and non-users, behavior changes and consumer understanding of marketing materials for new products.

"The law sets a high standard to make sure that tobacco products marketed to reduce risk actually reduce risk," Deyton said.

The FDA's handling of modified-risk products has been highly anticipated by both the public health community and bigger tobacco companies, which are looking for new products to sell as they face declining cigarette demand due to tax increases, health concerns, smoking bans and social stigma.

Some tobacco companies have alternatives like snus small pouches like tea bags that users stick between the cheek and gum and dissolving tobacco finely milled tobacco shaped into orbs, sticks and strips. But they are not explicitly marketed as less risky than cigarettes.

The FDA is required to respond to a company's application within a year of its submission and acceptance. FDA officials would not comment on how many applications have been submitted to date.

US Appeals Court Upholds law on cig pack images

Looks like those graphic images WILL be coming to packs. But if anyone thinks these images are gonna prevent me OR a teen from picking up a pack of precious cigs, then that person is crazy.

I just hope this topic of graphic images on cig packs doesn't turn into a soap opera with tobacco companies asking for an appeal. And if they win, antismoking organizations will ask for another appeal. And so forth.

If he actually banned tobacco, that would be a nice way to make him lose more supporters. I bet even all of the other politicians would hate the idea of a tobacco ban. Cause as I said, they love takin lots of tax money from smokers.

Wheres the tax money gonna come from if tobacco got banned for real? From paying 10 bucks for a beer can?

I didnt even bring up how a tobacco ban will force people to get cigs in the same way they get weed and other drugs. Get the cigs underground!

Disney changes obesity exhibit after complaints. The interactive exhibit, Habit Heroes, featured animated fitness superheros Will Power and Callie Stenics and super-sized villains Snacker and Lead Bottom, who eat junk food and watch too much television. Critics said the exhibit reinforces stereotypes that obese children are lazy and have poor eating habits. Blue Cross and Blue Shield partnered with Disney to create the exhibit. Blue Cross spokesman John W. Herbkersman said the exhibit was meant to be helpful. "We're appalled to learn that Disney, a traditional hallmark of childhood happiness and joy, has fallen under the shadow of negativity and discrimination," the National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance said in a statement.

Judge rules in favor of Big Tobacco on graphic labels for packs

The judge is wrong on tax hiking can help motivate people to quit (instead of using the graphic labels). People are always gonna smoke regardless of the pack price. But I agree the graphic labels are unconstitutional.

A smoker who decides buying cigs is more important than buying shoes for his/her kids is the type of smoker who is poor at budgeting money. It has nothing to do with showing how the smoker is more addicted to nic.

A smoker has to learn to make some sacrifices in order to keep affording cigs. Like buying less junk food in stores or cutting down on booze. And looking for a place with cheap cig prices is a nice plus.

It sounds like Cigarettiquette will be a very interesting book to read. Since it's rare reading books written by serious smokers.

And the fact this book's author is a lady who's proud to be a smoker is a nice plus to me.

JASPER, Ala. (WIAT) - A city smoking ban has some business owners trying to stay one step ahead of the law ... they're determined to allow customers to smoke.

Midnight Special owner Rick Garrison says he has come up with a way to lock out law enforecement ... by replacing his locks with a card swiping system. Each member of the private club would be issued a card. Garrison says it's the same tactic used in the past by businesses serving alcohol when the town was dry.

Since the law went into effect, Jasper police have already issued one ticket ... a second violation would shut the club down.
Jasper City Attorney Russell Robertson tells us Garrison is legally allowed to install the card-swiping system, as long as, he allows law enforcement into the business at any time.
