Cigar Fest gets smoking ban waiver

http://www.ketv. com/news/ 22552001/ detail.html

LINCOLN, Neb. --

Patrons at a dance hall in Lincoln were allowed to smoke for a short time on Friday evening, despite a statewide smoking ban.

For five hours, patrons at the Pla-Mor Ballroom were allowed to smoke cigars indoors. Organizers of Cigar Fest got a temporary waiver from the Department of Health and Human Services to skirt the ban under the Clean Indoor Air Act.

Smokers in bars may get ticketed (Article)

CORPUS CHRISTI — The grace period has expired for those who ignored the city’s ban on smoking in bars, Police Chief Troy Riggs said.

“We need to take it seriously,” he said Friday afternoon as happy hour approached. “There has been plenty of knowledge out there about this. There’s no warning period needed.”

Since the ban took effect in June, smokers caught lighting up in bars, pool halls and bingo halls received only warnings. Although police had the power to ticket offenders, no citations were issued.

The ban and warnings didn’t stop some people from lighting up in bars. Some bar owners complied with the law by posting ‘no smoking’ signs, but gave patrons drink glasses or cups for their ashes.

The Caller-Times called attention to the situation in an article Feb. 2, and on Thursday, Riggs directed officers to issue citations during their routine checks on bars. Both the smoker and the bar can face fines.

Police officers will start ticketing people who are smoking inside bars during routine bar checks.

“I don’t want to take away an officer’s discretion,” Riggs said. “They need to know that (citations) are an option. The City Council thought it was important enough to pass it. We need to enforce it.”

Bars that violate the ordinance by providing ash trays could also face fines and routine offenders will be reported to the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission, which regulates liquor licences.

The police department will also work with the health department to drop in on each bar to check for compliance.

The ban, which the council approved in January 2009, expanded a previous ban on smoking in restaurants to include bars, pool halls and bingo halls.

The smoking ban took effect June 15, three months later than initially planned, after business owners asked for a delayed start so they would have more time to build patios for smokers. A petition aiming to overturn the ban failed to attract enough signatures of registered city voters to force the issue to a citywide vote.

A smoke shop online got raided

I wasn't aware raids of online smoke shops can happen at immient times. The idea of the ATF raiding online smoke shops at any given time actually sounds scary.

Here's the page of an online smoke shop dat's now out of business thanks to an unexpected visit from the ATF.

Property Rights Newsletta (EDITED)

I love how folks in Greece claim "The whole country is smoking" despite em having a smoking ban. If one thinks banning smoking in a country is gonna make all smokers stop, I dunno what the heck YOU smoking. Cuz it ain't cigs!

I see lots of people smoking in public. Kids included. And I live under a smoking ban in my home state. And I ain't gonna imagine about the crime rate skyrocketing if the USA ever becomes smoke-free in all 50 states.

The authors explain that this overemphasis on quit methods like nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) has led to the "medicalisation of smoking cessation," despite good evidence that the most successful method used by most ex-smokers is quitting 'cold turkey' or reducing-then-quitting.

It is designed to be quickly and easily read in print-out form in dimly lit bars or on restaurant counters and packs strong information and analysis into its 20 pages.

Smokers shouldn't have house parties outside

(Dis was originally meant to be a reply to a comment on here from "mary." But I prefer posting my comment replies as posts, so everyone can see em. She mentioned how smokers' parties at homes end up being outside cuz of the antismoking propaganda....POISON-anda as I call it.)

************************

What's the Fkin point of having a party outside with smokers in the cold? If I ever host a crib party, only smokers would be allowed to visit. Nonsmokers are welcome as long as dey no whine about smelling SHS.

I still don't believe in forcing smokers outside cause dat reminds me of the days when I could get kicked out in the cold for being a Black person.

I know I don't like someone kicking me out for racial reasons. And I sure as heck hate someone telling me to take the cig outside as well. Juz cuz dey hate the smoke? Poor antismoking crybabies! Maybe antis can go outside instead!
